Reviewing soft robotic gloves and FES for hand-function support

Overview: A review focused on post-stroke hand-function rehabilitation, organizing research trends on combining soft robotic gloves with FES. The central question is how to coordinate externally applied finger-actuation force with muscle contraction produced by electrical stimulation.
Commentary: A robotic glove physically assists the fingers, while FES stimulates the nerves and muscles directly. When the two are combined, mistimed movement between them risks the two forms of assistance working against each other rather than together.

Mapping NMES protocols used in early rehabilitation for critically ill patients

Overview: A systematic review organizing the stimulation protocols used in studies of NMES for critically ill patients who have difficulty moving voluntarily. The review examines the lack of consistency in conditions across studies.
Commentary: When comparing EMS studies, frequency alone isn't enough — pulse width, on/off time, intensity, electrode placement, and number of treatment days all need to be reported. When these conditions differ, two interventions labeled "NMES" can end up being quite different from one another.

Trialing a short-term FES program for chronic foot drop

Overview: A pilot study examining the feasibility and outcomes of a short, in-facility FES program for people with chronic post-stroke foot drop.
Commentary: Gait-assist FES devices stimulate the muscles that lift the ankle in sync with the walking cycle. Unlike stationary training devices such as an ab-belt, sensing and stimulation timing are what matter most here.
